Raw Local Honey for Allergies
BY AMY LUPTON
Honey is an all around superfood, and you will have me singing its praises all the time. Here at Liferoot we are stewards to thousands and thousands of bees. Watching the amazing miracle that creates honey and then the amazing superfood it becomes for people is the best!
Honey can do everything from heal wounds, help with gut & digestive health, calm skin rashes, and so much more.
It can also help with allergies, particularly seasonal allergies, due to its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immune-boosting properties.
It is important to get local honey from your community (check your farmers markets or local grocery stores). Most cities have a local beekeeper association if you need additional help finding honey in your area.
A Note about Honey Consumption: If you are allergic to bees, there is a chance you might have an intolerance to honey. Also, honey is high in fructose and glucose, so eat in moderation. Super foods are best eaten in smaller quantities. It makes them more effective.
Honey Contains Natural Antihistamine
Honey contains a natural antihistamine from trace amounts of pollen from local flowers. Consuming this type of honey may help desensitize your immune system to the pollen, acting like a natural form of immunotherapy. Some people believe eating raw local honey can reduce the severity of allergic reactions over time, and there are many anecdotal testimonies of people reversing allergies just with raw and local honey.
Honey Soothes Throat & Reduces Irritation
Honey is soothing and anti-inflammatory, making it great for easing sore throats, coughing, or post-nasal drip that often accompany allergies. The composition of honey helps irritation in the throat caused by mucus build up. It helps relieve congestion, which is especially helpful for allergies that affect the respiratory system, like pollen or dust allergies. It also provides moisture to the nasal passages and throat, helping to ease the dryness and irritation caused by constant sneezing or coughing.
Honey has Been Said to Strengthen the Immune System
Honey is rich in antioxidants, which help boost the immune system and protect the body against infections that can worsen allergy symptoms. It also has antibacterial and antifungal properties, helping to keep the respiratory system free of infections.
