What is a sliding scale? It is a tool that allows a service or product to be obtained according to associated factors of the purchaser. This allows multiple price points according to your wealth and privilege.
A sliding scale payment is intended to make the program affordable while also covering some of the costs and labor of running the CSA and making the products. When deciding your position on the sliding scale please consider your income, family size, and your level of privilege around access to resources.
Liferoot’s aim for the CSA is to make it available to be enjoyed by everyone, aiming for a community that takes care of each other well. If you participate at what level works best for you and your family, then this in turn produces availability for more, and takes care of the maker and grower.
Here is some excellent verbiage from Little Bird Botanicals, explaining it well.
“Sliding scales are often based on individual income levels, with people of higher incomes paying more. However, many factors complicate and affect our financial status. Some groups of people have costs that the larger population does not. Others have access to resources that are not always reflected in their lifestyle choices and income levels. Please consider both your class background and earning power when choosing your share payment.”
We use a managed sliding scale, offering 3 options. Pick what feels right for you, and I trust that you will honestly access your relationship to income, privilege, class & fairness. I won’t come check in on you about it. 😉
